C Reactive Protein is a plasma protein, an acute phase protein produced by the liver and by adipocytes. It is a member of the pentraxin family of proteins and not related to C-peptide or protein C. Recent research suggests that patients with elevated basal levels of CRP are at an increased risk for diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
